OET

About OET (Occupational English Test)

The Occupational English Test (OET) is an internationally accepted English language proficiency exam created specifically for healthcare professionals. It assesses the communication skills required to register and work effectively in English-speaking healthcare systems.

OET is uniquely designed around real-life clinical situations that healthcare professionals face every day. This makes the test practical, relevant, and directly aligned with workplace communication—whether interacting with patients, colleagues, or other medical professionals.

Global Recognition

OET is widely accepted by healthcare regulatory authorities across multiple countries, including:

  • Australia

  • New Zealand

  • Singapore

  • Dubai (UAE)

  • United Kingdom

  • Ireland

  • Ukraine

Beyond professional registration, OET scores are also recognized for immigration purposes, such as work and student visas, in many of these countries. Universities, hospitals, and healthcare employers accept OET as proof of English proficiency, especially for clinical and professional communication.

OET Test Structure

The OET exam is divided into four skill-based sub-tests:

  • Listening

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Speaking

A key feature of OET is that each sub-test is profession-specific. For instance, nurses are assessed using nursing-related content, while doctors encounter medical scenarios relevant to their field.

OET Scoring System

Each sub-test is graded from A to E, where A represents the highest level of performance.

Grade Description
A Very high level of performance
B High level of performance; effective and accurate professional communication
C Acceptable performance, but below the requirement of many health councils
D Moderate performance; considerable improvement needed
E Low performance; significant improvement required

To qualify for professional registration or visa applications, candidates are generally required to achieve at least a Grade B in all four sub-tests. OET results remain valid for two years.
